چکیده
We present on O(n log n) greedy algorithm with a worst-case performance ratio > 4 for the unbounded knapsack problem, an O(n log n) greedy algorithm with a worst-case performance ratio of ~ for the subset-sum problem, and an O(n log n) greedy algorithm with a worst-case performance ratio of ~for the partition problem. These greedy algorithms, in the sense of worst-case performance, are better than other known O(n log n) greedy algorithms.

An employee transporting problem
An employee transporting problem is described and a set partitioning model is developed. An investigation of the model leads to a knapsack problem as a surrogate problem. Finding a partition corresponding to the knapsack problem provides a solution to the problem. An exact algorithm is proposed to obtain a partition (subset-vehicle combination) corresponding to the knapsack solution. It require...
متن کاملOn Strong NP-Completeness of Rational Problems
The computational complexity of the partition, 0-1 subset sum, unbounded subset sum, 0-1 knapsack and unbounded knapsack problems and their multiple variants were studied in numerous papers in the past where all the weights and profits were assumed to be integers. We re-examine here the computational complexity of all these problems in the setting where the weights and profits are allowed to be...
متن کاملAverage-Case Performance of Rollout Algorithms for Knapsack Problems
Rollout algorithms have demonstrated excellent performance on a variety of dynamic and discrete optimization problems. Interpreted as an approximate dynamic programming algorithm, a rollout algorithm estimates the value-to-go at each decision stage by simulating future events while following a heuristic policy, referred to as the base policy. While in many cases rollout algorithms are guarantee...
متن کاملThe Subset Sum game☆
In this work we address a game theoretic variant of the Subset Sum problem, in which two decision makers (agents/players) compete for the usage of a common resource represented by a knapsack capacity. Each agent owns a set of integer weighted items and wants to maximize the total weight of its own items included in the knapsack. The solution is built as follows: Each agent, in turn, selects one...
متن کاملApproximate minimization algorithms for the 0/1 Knapsack and Subset-Sum Problem
The well-studied 0=1 Knapsack and Subset-Sum Problem are maximization problems that have an equivalent minimization version. While exact algorithms for one of these two versions also yield an exact solution for the other version, this does not apply to -approximate algorithms. We present several -approximate Greedy Algorithms for the minimization version of the 0=1 Knapsack and the Subset-Sum P...
